Teaching Soft vs Hard using food

We are working in our homeschooling unit this week on learning about soft vs hard.

Teach toddlers and preschoolers the concept of soft and hard using food! This is such a fun activity!

Honestly, I have been surprised at how quickly Gracie has picked it up. We started out playing with her toys and picking out the soft and hard ones. Each toy I picked up I would say something like, “This is a soft pom pom. Feel how soft this is!” After a few times of doing that with something hard or soft, Gracie started walking through the house pointing out objects that were soft and hard.

She even took it a step further on her own and started separating different objects into piles of soft and hard. I was shocked!

One of our activities was to pick out soft and hard foods. I gathered a plate of whatever foods I had at home that were convenient. (We were eating a Mexican meal, so I was already peeling the avocados.)

I put them on a platter and gave them to her at lunch time. She was so excited to point out the one object on the plate that she had never seen before.

Ironically enough, it was the one object on the plate that was REALLY not healthy for her. How do they do that??

I told her to sort the food into soft and hard objects.

When she was finished sorting, she was able to eat whichever ones she wanted.

Take a guess on what she ate first!

Have we connected on Facebook yet? I would love to connect there, where we talk about everything from mom advice to toddler horror stories!
